Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

1 Attachment(s)
1/10oz Gold Eagle, 1/10th oz Platinum Eagle, and of course a 1oz silver eagle. They all have certificates from the Washington Mint. Year is 1999. I paid spot per coin (a little under spot on the silver).

Obviously there is a premium on fractionals, but is that premium increased or decrease with a set like this?

That kind of stuff goes STRAIGHT to my "melt" bucket. Dude, aren't you a dealer? I'm a bit surprised at some of your queries.

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

No, I'm a scrap buyer. But me and my partner are both stacking... I didn't buy this at spot thinking I would turn a profit, just bought it at spot knowing I saved money on premiums, with the potential for some profit if they had any value beyond the metal (plus, my platinum holding is absolutely pathetic so anything helps :111:).

... plus the guy sold us 83 BU SAEs at $17 each. Again, that wasn't for us to make money, just to stack some more silver on the cheap. I also bought an 1894 $5 gold piece at spot from him. I wasn't really concerned with making anything from this guy - his value to me was in all those cheap SAEs.

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

From what I've seen, generally the premiums are diminished for colorized coins. Unless you can find somebody on ebay or such who likes stuff like that; there must be somebody out there willing to pay premium, or else they prolly wouldn't make 'em.

I agree that the silver round is pretty fugly, and I'm shocked that anybody would (or even could) do that to a GAE. The platinum round's not bad though...I certainly wouldn't kick it out of my safe.

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

The colored gold fractional and the colored SAE might bring a premium to a collector on ebay but I do not know exactly how much it would bring on ebay and you would have to factor in ebay and paypal fees to see if it is worth selling it on ebay.

I've got colorized Lunars. Nobody wants them.

I want to say decrease, but, there are people that buy that stuff from QVC at 3 AM so ya never know...

Sorry! No offense, But those coins are HIDEOUS!!! ROFL!
:puke::puke::puke::puke::puke::puke::puke::puke::p uke::553:

Edit: On second look, that quite possibly may be the ugliest ASE I have ever seen! (No offense)

i would sell all of those at next opportunity.

Easy fix for them....acetone bath

:signs14: , but anyone that colorizes gold coins should have their fingers cut off!

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

No argument from me, they should've left these coins alone. I've never seen a pretty colorized one.

I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some rarity value on these or anything before we split them up, sell them, whatever. I'll probably keep the platinum PAE and PAEs though, since if I were to try to buy that amount of non-colorized (especially in platinum) I'd be eaten alive with premiums.

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

there seems to be some people willing to pay more for them. apmex sells them at a slight premium to "regular" bullion coins.

Those are extremely ugly though. Colorized coins are tacky, I've seen a lot better ones. That SAE is just horrible.

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

No acetone?

Give 'em a bath in gentle boiling water. Most have vinyl colorizing that will peel away from the coin when it gets hot.

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

colorized silver rounds are one thing.

Not the kind of thing that I would stack (except at serious discount), but they fine to give as gifts.

Now colorized gold...COLORIZED GOLD!

That makes my toes curl.

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

So acetone won't have a (long or short term) negative effect on the metal? Platinum, silver, or gold?

The boiling water idea seems good too. If I can get that ugly crap off, I'll have a good SAE, but most importantly, fractional 1/10oz gold and platinum eagles, all bought at no premium. That would be nice.

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

100% acetone should not. It will evaporate cleanly.

Do not blame me if this isn't the case though.

That doesn't make me feel very comfortable. :36_3_12:

What kind of negative effect could boiling them have? Any?

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

acetone won't affect the metal at all. it's good if you have coins that have sellotape residue, for example. should work on the colours if they're vinyl based.

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

OK, thanks. I will try to get this horrendous color off this week with aceton, and report the results.

Cleaning Gold Coins

Quote:

Stains can be removed. How depends on what has caused the stain. Solvents such as acetone or nail varnish remover will work well for removing many stains. This will also remove adhesive tape residues, it is surprising how many people use Sellotape to stick coins to a piece of paper or card either for storage or to send through the post. Obviously it is best to avoid sticking anything to your coins, as it will often leave a mark which may disfigure the coin.
That's from Lawrence Chard, who does know his stuff.

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

The only colorization I like is gold plating on silver, but I wouldn't pay extra even for that. I once bought a colorized 8 oz SAE, but only because it was all the dealer had left. When I sold it at Ebay it brought the same price as any other form of silver.

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

OK -

I tried the SAE in boiling water for a few minutes, that didn't do jack.

So then I borrowed my girlfriend's 100% acetone polish remover, dumped it in a bowl with all 3 coins, went to watch a movie, and the color rubbed right off with a cloth.

So now I have two great looking fractionals at no premium. :565: (the SAE had some ugly spot on it not related to the colorization)

This thread will serve as an invaluable resource for anyone else who buys jacked up coins in the future. A little acetone and you can restore their original beauty!

Skeptic, please, please change your avatar! That makes me cringe---

Oh yeah, I've got some colored lunars too. At least they are worth silver spot. I haven't posted any pictures of them because there is no way to make those look anything other than fugly.

Maybe I should start a poll: What is more hideous? My avatar or those coins?

Re: Bought some colorized Eagle fractionals - worth a premium?

I picked up several colorized eagles recently. Regular SAE were 2.50 over spot, colorized only 1.00 over. I have several others in my collection. One great day they will all take a nice long acetone bath... Except the Earnhardt ones in capsules... I still believe I'll find an Earnhardt fan who will pay a premium for that colorization.

Not too long ago, my local coin dealer had some of those colored SAE's and I think that he was selling at the same price that he was selling his regular SAE's for.

This is off topic here but Skeptic, you might want to check your kitchen cabinets because I think that your avatar is eating up all of your food. :111: :111: :111:

I get those painted coins out of the melt bucket every time I see them. Easy to clean em up.
